---------------------------------------
Dear Grandparents University Participant:
We are three months away from the 2008 MSU Grandparents University program and we hope you are looking forward to your experience on campus!
It is important to us that everyone is properly prepared to fully enjoy the experience. Over the next few months, we will be sending several emails with information to help you prepare for Grandparents University. Keep an eye out for these messages, which will include information on dorm move-in, parking, class assignments and evening activities. We encourage you to also check for updates in the “Homework” section of the website at www.grandparents.msu.edu.
We continue to receive frequent questions related to the following program items.
Class Assignments
We are in the process of making the class assignments and an e-mail will be sent in advance of the program with your assigned classes. You will receive your class assignments in the next couple of weeks. Two important concepts to keep in mind:
The classes are conducted by faculty, graduate students and staff specialists who are all volunteering their time. In some cases, the instructors have agreed to conduct multiple sessions of a class in order to accommodate more people. Yet other instructors are limited due to their schedules and other commitments. Not all classes are offered at all times. Therefore, it is possible that your selection of preferred classes may conflict with each other.
Class sizes are limited based on the preference of the instructor and the availability of equipment and resources. The capacity of the classes is the main reason registration was limited to 800 participants. Several classes had more than 200 peoples requesting the class. The most popular class choices were GPS Treasure Hunting, LegoTM Robotics, Joy of Chemistry, Archery, Zeke the Wonderdog, and Videogame Design. Please remember that assignments are made based on the order registration was received and more than 500 people registered for Grandparents University in the first hour of registration.
Busses
Classes will be held in buildings across campus as determined by the instructors and/or the required resources. We have chartered several busses to help you get around campus. The busses will be making a loop around campus with periodic stops in the vicinity of buildings hosting classes. The busses will not provide door-to-door service so participants are strongly encouraged to wear a good pair of walking shoes.
Bikes
Several families have found bicycles to be a wonderful way of getting around campus. If you consider this, remember to bring a helmet and lock. The MSU Bike Project (http://www.bikes.msu.edu/) has a limited number of adult-sized bikes for rent.
Hotel
A block of rooms is being held at two area hotels for families arriving early or staying late. Contact these hotels directly and mention Grandparents University to take advantage of special rates. Both hotels offer free airport shuttle service from Capitol City Airport as well as shuttle service to Holmes Hall.
Candlewood Suites: $89/night (plus tax). Limited rooms are available until May 1, 2008. Phone (517) 351-8181.
East Lansing Marriott: $119/night (plus tax). Limited rooms are available until May 25, 2008. Phone (517) 337-4400.
If you need to make special arrangements for disabled persons and you did not indicate this on the special needs section of the registration form, please contact us as soon as possible.
Have a great spring and GO GREEN!
Sincerely,
The MSU Grandparents University Team
